The list of ways to improve your business could go on forever, but today I want to focus on 5 key principles you should implement into your model.
Where are you going?
It’s like going on a road trip. You need to have a map, GPS or an App to tell you how to arrive in the right place and on time.
In business, a map is needed as well. It’s a planned route directing you in the right direction, keeping you focused on the objectives and protecting you against costly mistakes. If you haven’t guessed it already, it’s a business plan. Know what you have, what you want and how you’re going to get there. You can always take detours along the way, but a plan is still necessary.
Time
This is a tricky one. Depending on what industry/trade you’re in, this one can play games with you, make fun of you and put you to bed early, and not even read you a bedtime story. It’s imminent that you pay attention to what you’re working on and how it relates to your businesses bottom line.
Making a list is always a smart way to ensure your priorities are in order and stay in order. There are also many different time and project management apps/programs out there. We use Basecamp and Evernote for helping stay organized.
Finances
That’s a scary word that usually is the result of a business failing. Not having your finances in order can be extremely detrimental to your business. You need to have a relationship with your finances, knowing about all incoming and outgoing capital, what is being spent, why it’s being spent, upcoming expenses, reoccurring payments, outstanding invoices…etc.
I find a very useful tool for keeping this portion of the business in order is Mint.
Location
Although the bricks and mortar location is important, thats not what I’m talking about here. I mean, are you online? If not, get there.
I’m not saying get on all the social sites (although being on some would help with potential leads and customer engagement). I’m saying start with a website.
At the rate we’re evolving, if you’re not online , you will end up running backwards down a hill (don’t try that, the results aren’t pretty!!). Understand that your current and potential customers are online, so it seems like a no-brainer (or at least it should).
Marketing
Did you think for a second that a CMO and Partner of a marketing agency would make a list of essential business musts and not include marketing? LOL.
Although I’m biased, it’s vital to your business to have a plan of action how how to identify opportunity, create opportunity, how to translate leads into sales, and how to build out a campaign to increase brand awareness which, in turn, will create brand loyalty and advocates.
You also need to know how to effectively communicate with customers online, gather insight and feedback, and then put that into a strategy to not only make your customers happy, but to create longevity for your brand. This section could turn into another post altogether, so I will stop here.
Don’t forget, as you grow and evolve in business, one things needs to remain strong – your attitude! You need to be, keep and stay positive throughout the journey. It’s going to be easy to throw in the towel, but thats what separates winners from whiners.
Your Friend,
Troy Claus

Thanks for stopping by. You're absolutely right! Google tools are amazing, and adding analytics to anything you do is a smart move. Measurement is key when executing on any initiative.

LikeGreat list, Troy! I have been feeling them all lately and can say that without a doubt (right behind money) attitude is the most important tool or resource of all for a small business owner. There are going to be plenty of days and situations that can get you down, make you question what you're doing, and generally make for a bad time. If you let your attitude go down with those days, you're sunk. I've let mine dip lately, but I'm happy to say I'm back in the positive 'saddle' and planning to stay there!
I also LOVE Evernote...haven't tried Basecamp, but have heard others mention it.. Jon Buscall, I think? Will check it out!
thanks, Troy!

LikeEricaAllison I think it's only human to dip, Erica: what's more important is always to emerge. Life's a teetertotter, and as long as we accept the downs and strive and appreciate the ups, go with the flow and stop beating ourselves up when we have the down, or dip day, life is good! Cheers! LikeEricaAllison Thanks Erica,
You're absolutely right, your attitude will dictate a large part of your road to success. We're actually working with a new client who has developed an amazing 12 month system filled with modules...etc and a large part focuses on that exact subject (pretty exciting).
What disturbs me a bit are the people who are so fast to dismiss positive thinking and developing a positive mindset because they think it's "silly" or "cheesy". But it's really not, it's a vital part of being successful.
Cheers,
Troy

LikeHi Troy: nice to connect here:)
I think your key line is "...how it relates to your business bottom line". I see many business owners chasing shiny objects, jumping on bandwagons or, worse still, doing the same-old-same-old, without asking themselves: What significant, beneficial difference does this make to my customer and hence, to my business bottom line? Why am I doing what I'm doing, for what measurable results?
Being open to opportunities, pausing to reflect on their significant impact, taking action, then measuring and evaluating are all steps we should take to improve our business, ongoing. Cheers! Kaarina

LikeKDillabough LOL! Chasing shiny objects... I love that. Your last statement is not only spot on, but lays out the importance of patience. Too many people try to rush success, thats usually their first and last mistake!

LikeNice primer here, Troy. As far as location, finances and marketing go, I think the social media revolution has made in easier in some respects. But there definitely needs to be a balance and sometimes I think the in-person relationship building gets short-changed.
Having said that, I work with a lot of writers and authors and I am continually amazed at how many of them an online presence they own and control (like a blog or website). So, "Start with a website" is very good advice. If you are only on Twitter of Facebook, you don't control the space and you don't have that all-important email list to connect with those people. You also don't have a home base to send them to.

LikeJudyDunn I love that Judy "If you are only on Twitter of Facebook, you don't control the space and you don't have that all-important email list to connect with those people. You also don't have a home base to send them to."
That is very true! DannyBrown actually did a series around create your hub (i think it was titled differently) He not only showed you how to do it, he taught you why it was so important.
Cheers Judy,

LikeHey Troy, these are great tips and applications small businesses can use to streamline, organize and manage their businesses.
You should do a series or create a resource that makes it easy for small business to be exposed to cost effective applications and tools, and in some cases free tools, to leverage in their business.
10 years ago, even 5 years ago, businesses had to invest a lot more money in resources to manage their businesses. Not anymore. They just need to be made aware of the best tools and apps so they can take advantage of the technology that's available.
Cheers bro!

Great point about how business has evolved so much over time. It's funny to look back and see how different things were done, sometimes it even makes me scratch my head haha.

LikeI LOVE Evernote! Big, big fan. But you already knew that.
I think the only thing you're missing in the finance section is, "Let's make money!" It is, after all, your mantra.
